5th Grade Curriculum

Language Arts: There will be an emphasis on non-fiction and fictions texts as well as writing this year as we prepare students for middle school. Also, students are encouraged to independently read chapter books in their free time. We will be reading the following novels this school year as well as other smaller books and numerous articles:

The Templeton Twins Have an Idea                    The Lion, the Witch, & the Wardrobe                      The 13 Planets
Shutting Out the Sky                                                Wonderstruck                                                                 Frindle

Weekly tests will be given on spelling words and monthly quizzes for grammar units will be every few weeks.

Math: The majority of math skills taught in fifth grade involve decimals, fractions, and operations with some volume, measurement & geometry.  It is of the utmost importance that your child knows their basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts. Nightly review of these skills at home will reinforce this. Every Thursday there will be a timed math fact quiz. The content will be dependent upon what we are learning or needing to review (multiplication, division, other skills). We will average these quiz grades together and count it as a grade. We will use a mixture of Go!Math and Engage NY.

Social Studies: This year’s focus will be on history from the Civil War to the Civil Rights Movement. We will use a spiral notebook as well as SS Weekly newspapers and SS textbooks.
