Language Arts: There will be an emphasis on non-fiction and fictions texts as well as writing this year as we prepare for the TCAP Writing Assessment in early Feb. Also, students are encouraged to independently read chapter books in their free time. We will be reading several books & novels this school year:
The Giving Tree Science non-fiction Out of the Dust
Number the Stars The Giraffe, the Pelly, and Me Esio Trot
Weekly tests will be given on spelling words; biweekly tests for Wordly Wise words, and grammar unit tests will be every few weeks.
Math: The majority of math skills taught in fifth grade involve division, decimals, and fractions. It is of the utmost importance that your child knows their basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts. Nightly review of these skills at home will reinforce this. Every Thursday there will be a timed math fact quiz. The content will be dependent upon what we are learning (multiplication and/or division). We will average these quiz grades together (dropping the lowest one) and count it as a grade. Also, this year, students will complete 3 math assessments where they will show their work in-depth.
Social Studies: This year’s focus will be on history from the Civil War to the present.
Science: This year’s focus will be on cells, force, organism relationships, and the solar system. Experiments will be conducted throughout the year.
