5th Grade Curriculum

Language Arts: There will be an emphasis on reading different types of genres as well as writing this year as we prepare students for middle school. Also, students are encouraged to independently read chapter books in their free time. We will have biweekly spelling tests & monthly grammar quizzes. Reading quizzes will be done approximately every other week. We use the Wonders curriculum. Students can view their Reading book & activities through https://www.clever.com then click on McGraw-Hill.

Math: The majority of math skills taught in 5th grade involve decimals, fractions, and operations as well as volume, measurement, & geometry.  It is of the utmost importance that your child knows their basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts. Nightly review of these skills at home will reinforce this. Every Thursday there will be a timed math fact quiz. The content will be dependent upon what we are learning or needing to review (multiplication, division, other skills). We will average these quiz grades together and count it as a grade. We use the Go!Math curriculum.
This is an awesome website with learning videos, especially if you need help with HW:

Social Studies: This year’s focus will be on history from the settlement of TN to the Civil Rights Movement. We will use a spiral notebook as well as SS Weekly newspapers and SS textbooks.
Online US Weekly newspapers can be accessed through https://www.clever.com

Science: We will use inquiry & experiments to explore physical, earth, space, & life science this year! The Science book can be accessed through https://www.clever.com
